WESTLAND WHIRLWIND Mk 1 MAQUETTE : Special Hobby - Ech: 1/32

Le Westland WHIRLWIND est un chasseur bi-moteur qui a servi dans la R.A.F en petit nombre au début de la seconde guerre mondiale. Malgré son armement très puissant de 4 canons Hispano Suiza de 20 m/m groupés dans son nez, il n’a pas connu le succès de son homologue Américain le célèbre P 38 Lightning en raison de ses moteurs Peregrine manquant de fiabilité, par rapport aux Rolls Royce Merlin reservés aux Spitfire et Hurricane, au potentiel de développement qu’offrait le Mosquito

Voici ma petite dernière…commencée fin février après mon Gauntlet que tu dois avoir quelque part dans ta boîte à articles ; jamais je n’ai mis autant de temps sur une maquette. Cela a été une longue succession de problèmes, les uns après les autres, jusqu’au dernier moment de la séance photos, en raison d’une roulette de queue cassée, suivi d’un titre erroné et d’un mauvais emplacement sur Brit Modellers. La maquette par elle-même est très simple en regard de son échelle, c’est pourquoi je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’en rajouter un peu ma façon… Voici la vraie bête : j’ai voulu représenter celle-ci volets baissés ainsi que l’armement.

The Westland WHIRLWIND is a twin-engine fighter that served in the R.A.F in small numbers at the beginning of the Second World War. Here is my latest…started at the end of February after my Gauntlet that you must have somewhere in your article box; never have I put so much time on a model. This was a long succession of problems, one after the other, until the last moment of the photo shoot, due to a broken tail wheel, followed by an erroneous title and a bad location on Brit Modellers. The model itself is very simple compared to its scale, which is why I could not help but add a little my way… Here is the real beast: I wanted to represent this one lowered shutters as well as the armament.

Comme tout montage, il faut commencer par le cockpit. Celui fourni dans la boîte se suffit à lui-même. Like any assembly, you have to start with the cockpit. The one provided in the box is sufficient on its own.

Baisser les volets a été plus sportif car ils sont solidaires d’une partie des nacelles moteur qu’il a fallu découper et adapter sans oublier de s’occuper des logements de roues. Du gâteau …..enfin presque… Lowering the flaps was more sporty because they are attached to a part of the engine nacelles that had to be cut and adapted without forgetting to take care of the wheel housings. Ensuite, il a fallu s’occuper de la pièce maitresse : le nez et son armement, les 4 canons de 20 m/m et leurs tambours de munitions, sans aucune idée des dimensions à l’échelle, à part une estimation à l’ oeil nu des photos disponibles, en commençant par découper le nez en utilisant les lignes de structures moulées, qu’il a ensuite fallu meubler en créant l’armement de toute pièces : canons, tubes et culasses, tambours d’alimentation et tous les supports et blindages. Ici l’ensemble armement, les canons avec leur reins de bouche et ressorts anti recul, les culasses et les tambours qui se sont révélés surdimensionnés par rapport aux photos et qu’il a fallu refaire en résine. Here the whole armament, the cannons with their mouths and anti recoil springs, the breeches and the drums which proved oversized compared to the photos and which had to be remade in resin.

La taille surdimensionnée des premiers tambours à munitions, est nettement visible. The oversized size of the first ammunition drums, is clearly visible.
