Il y a quelques années, quand Domi, mon épouse, était Secrétaire Générale du Préfet de l’ ARIEGE, j’ai rencontré le Maire d’une petite commune du département, Mijanes, ayant appris que je m’intéressais à la chose aéronautique, m’a raconté cette histoire, aussi je lui ai proposé de lui faire la maquette de cet avion avant l’inauguration de son petit musée commémoratif…. A few years ago, when Domi, my wife was Secretary General of the Prefect of Ariège, I met the Mayor of a small town in the department, Mijanes, having learned that I was interested in aeronautics, told me this story, so I offered to make him the model of this plane before the inauguration of his small memorial museum….

  • Le 5 Décembre 1944 à 9h00, décollait de la base de la R.A.F de Northolt, le Dakota immatriculé NQ – Z, sérial FL 588, appartenant au 24 TRS (Transport Squadron) avec à son bord, un équipage de 3 hommes et 20 pilotes de planeurs du Glider Pilot Regiment en route pour les Indes, dans le cadre de la guerre du Pacifique. Le vol se déroule normalement à l’altitude entre 2500/3000 m à la vitesse de 270 km/h jusqu’à Toulouse où l’appareil rencontre un mur de mauvais temps. A environ 15h30, il s’écrase contre la face nord du Pic de La Camisette -2400 m, qui surplombe la commune de Mijanes : seuls 6 survivants, dont un mourra dans la nuit de ses blessures et du froid, un 7ème est découvert un peu plus tard. Le 6 Décembre, les deux seuls capables de marcher bien qu’avec difficulté, le SgT BAKER et le Major BLATCH, décident de tenter leur chance à trouver du secours et partent vers 10h en direction de la vallée. Après bien des difficultés et des souffrances, ils arrivent au village vers 16h30. Soit près plus de 6h de marche. La première maison qu’il trouvent est la boulangerie. Une caravane de secours part immédiatement selon les indications du Major BLATCH, mais doit renoncer en raison du mauvais temps et de la nuit. On December 5, 1944 at 9:00, took off from the base of the R.A.F of Northolt, the Dakota registered NQ – Z, serial FL 588, belonging to 24 TRS (Transport Squadron) with on board, a crew of 3 men and 20 pilots of gliders of the Glider Pilot Regiment en route to the Indies, as part of the Pacific War. The flight normally took place at altitude between 2500/3000 m at a speed of 270 km/h to Toulouse where the aircraft encountered a wall of bad weather. At about 3:30 pm, it crashed against the north face of the Pic de La Camisette -2400 m, which overlooks the town of Mijanes: only 6 survivors, one of whom will die in the night of his injuries and cold, a 7th is discovered a little later. On December 6, the only two able to walk although with difficulty, the SgT BAKER and Major BLATCH, decide to try their luck to find help and leave around 10am towards the valley. After many difficulties and sufferings, they arrive at the village around 4:30 pm. That is more than 6 hours walk. The first house they find is the bakery. A rescue caravan leaves immediately according to the indications of Major BLATCH, but must give up due to bad weather and night.
  • Le 7 Décembre, rejoints par une autre équipe, ils atteignent les 4 survivants qu’ils descendent , à dos d’homme et avec grandes difficultés, jusqu’au refuge du Pla où les attendent les secours .Les autres corps seront retrouvés à la fonte des neiges en 1945.  Le 22 Août 2005, grâce à l’intervention conjointe des autorités locales et régionales, après l’aval du ministère des armées et de l’ Etat Major de l’Armée de l’Air, une opération de récupération de quelques débris de l’appareil, a pu être menée par une équipe de l’Escadron d’Hélicoptères 1/67 et un de leur PUMA dans des conditions rendues difficiles par la nature du terrain.  Un petit musée commémoratif est créé par la municipalité. On peut y voir un des moteurs du Dakota, une hélice et une partie de l’aile, ainsi que divers objets et documents. La maquette ITALERI est au 1/48, aux couleurs et immatriculation de l’appareil écrasé. Le délai temps dont je disposais étant limité par la date de l’inauguration du musée, j’ai dû me contenter des photos. On December 7, joined by another team, they reach the 4 survivors that they descend, on the back of a man and with great difficulty, until the refuge of Pla where the rescue awaits them . The other bodies were found when the snow melted in 1945.  On August 22, 2005, thanks to the joint intervention of local and regional authorities, after the approval of the Ministry of the Armed Forces and the General Staff of the Air Force, an operation to recover some aircraft debris, was able to be led by a team of 1/67 Helicopter Squadron and one of their PUMA in conditions made difficult by the nature of the terrain.  A small memorial museum was created by the municipality. It shows one of the Dakota’s engines, a propeller and part of the wing, as well as various objects and documents. The model ITALERI is 1/48, the colors and registration of the crashed aircraft. The time I had was limited by the date of the inauguration of the museum, I had to settle for the photos.
